Issue 4 - Day 4

1 Corinthians 11

1 Corinthians 11:28-29

  1. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
  2. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

Coming together and sharing in bread and wine was a common occurrence in bible times, as it is today. In fact we should do it more. Unfortunately, as the saying goes, familiarity breeds contempt, and in no area more so than communion. It becomes all to easy to come and share together without thought. Worse, we feel that if we do not take part some will think we have a problem in our lives. What greater shame than letting someone see through our holy mask that we put on to come to church! How backwards we are.

A question. What is the body of Christ? It is the church, that is us, the local assembly of believers. So the problem is failing to recognise that you are sharing with your brothers in Christ. At the far extreme some take communion, not even knowing what it is about, or not being part of the local church. They have failed to discern the Lord's body. More commonly we come and take part when we have argument with a brother in Christ. The bible tells us of old that if you are in that state, leave your offering at the altar and go find your brother to sort out the problem before you offer sacrifice to God. When we are not at peace with one another, how can we truly worship God?

Do you have issue with another in the church? If so, take opportunity to sort it out. Call them today. Pray together and re-unite in following God.
