1 Corinthians 13
1 Corinthians 13:7-8
- Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
- Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
A slightly different spin from usual on these verses today. The question is, what lasts forever? The answer is charity, from the Greek agape meaning a caring love. I am not talking of the selfish "love" of the rich and famous that goes after a few years as they move on to another partner, but true love as described in this passage.
My wife's grandmother was an example in this. She exhibited this love all her life. As she grew older, she spoke less, remembered less, and so on. In her younger years she would be the first to pray and give testimony in church, but not in later years. However she never stopped loving. It has been the same with my grandparents.
Why do we hold sure store by the things that will cease? Our whole lives are spent investing in things that will not last. How much better to invest in what will last. Loving one another Christ says is the second commandment, after loving God. Invest in our relationships with God, and one another, for those are the things that last.
The bible tells us that where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. What do you really treasure in life, and is it the right thing in light of this passage?
