Romans 2

Romans 2:28-29

28. For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
29. But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

Are your Jewish? What do you think of when you picture a Jewish person? What God intended was the the Jewish nation would be a his special people, a nation of priests, leading the worship of the most high. Today there are many Jewish people who are not representing God to the world, they are not living by the law he gave them, in fact they don’t even know God, it is just a matter of who their mother is.

In this context, anyone who has the heart to follow God, is a Jew, however the mark of a Jew is spiritual not physical. Just as the Jewish people where told to circumcise their children so we are to practice circumcision of the heart. Our challenge is not in following the letter of the law, but the higher law of the spirit. Christ said he came not to replace the law, but to fulfil it, and in the sermon on the mount he pushed us to consider the thought as bad as the deed. Our attitudes are more important than our actions, for from our attitudes flow our actions.

What does your heart tell you? Are you seeking the praise of God, or of men?
We should also be teaching, but by example. It is no good preaching a gospel we do not follow ourselves. We are continually exhorted in scripture to pray unceasingly, to love one another, and to study the word of God. Are you doing these things yourself?
