1 Corinthians 14
1 Corinthians 14:23-25
- If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
- But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
- And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.
Speaking in tongues is always a contentious subject. I grew up in a church speaking in tongues, and so experienced that whole scene. Did it benefit me or anyone else? Not really. I now know that the word 'tongue' in the bible is more usually known in modern English as 'language'.
Paul reminds us that speaking in another language that those present do not know is just speaking to the air. He says, why do it! Further he is clear, anyone coming to a place where everyone is speaking rubbish will just think us all mad. How can it be a sign to the unbeliever if he cannot understand? Instead seek prophecy.
The disciples spoke the word of God powerfully, and amazed all as they were not educated men. Pray that you can speak the word of God powerfully also, for that is what prophecy is, and always has been, knowing what God is saying, and communicating it to the people around you. When unbelievers hear the Word of God, it is a sword, cutting deep, as it reveals the truth of their hearts. The people were amazed at the power of the disciples and knew that it was from God, so shall they be with you.
